CWL Advent initiatives emphasize mission to serve poor, homeless

SUBMITTED BY MAUREEN FARNAND, PRESIDENT of the CWL

The Catholic Women’s League of St. Maurice Parish has had the poor and homeless as our focus this past year. With the proceeds from our fundraising initiatives, we have given our support to several organizations whose aim is to provide food and shelter to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.

The Catholic Women’s League of Canada calls its members to grow in faith, and to witness to the love of God through ministry and service.

“The Catholic Women’s League of Canada calls its members to grow in faith, and to witness to the love of God through ministry and service.” (CWL of Canada) Here at St. Maurice we live out this call through prayer and the guidance of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

We take seriously our call to serve others and so, this Advent, we have been collecting socks, peanut butter and crackers for the Shepherds of Good Hope. In addition, the women’s and children’s socks collected at our Christmas potluck were donated to Cornerstone, a women’s shelter. Collectively, we brought in 264 pairs of socks – 150 men’s, 72 women’s and 42 children’s, as well as 32 boxes of crackers & 32 jars of peanut butter.

We continued with our gift card program of Tim Hortons and McDonald’s gift cards to distribute to the homeless here in the city. Our spiritual development chair, Mary Frances McKenna, will soon distribute 40 Tim Horton cards. Our many thanks go to the Movies with Meaning group, whose generous support of this initiative realized the purchase of 26 McDonald’s cards.

With Christmas just days away, may you feel God’s love and peace as we make room in our hearts for the coming of Jesus.  On behalf of the St. Maurice CWL, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
